our program - Horse Powered Reading

Additional Information

Welcome and thank you for checking out our website to learn more about us! Our program is based on the Horse Powered Reading Program® at the Cross P Ranch in Minnesota created by Dr. Michele Pickel out of Concordia University. We work with kids and equines to create an exciting way to learn reading, writing, math, and social skills. Each program session is individualized to meet the specific needs and interests of your child.

What does a lesson at L.E.A.R.N. look like?

This can vary somewhat according to the needs of your child, but each lesson will be held with a licensed teacher and one of our equines, Leonard the mini mule, Blossom or Apple. All lessons are conducted on the ground only and there isn’t any riding involved. The majority of sessions involve academic objectives that we work towards with fun experiential activities, games, and lessons. The equines are loose in the area that we work in.

What is the benefit of working with equines?

Working with equines changes the environment and brings something fresh and exciting to learning. Sometimes the traditional classroom setting can become stressful for a student who is struggling. Bringing them into a new environment with individualized lessons, helps to relieve their tension, relax, and just enjoy themselves while learning.  Equines have a physical effect on the human body to help calm and create a space that is more conductive to learning.

Equine Assisted Learning

Our instructor Angela has a master's degree with emphasis on equine assisted learning and applying that to the elementary education field. If you would like to read further up on what EAL is please click below.
